USDA handing out CAFTA propaganda in a news package

Posted June 17, 2005: According to a report in the Chicago Tribune the U.S. Department of Agriculture has distributed three dozen radio and television ads to news stations around the country advocating the passage of the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). The segments, which have been appearing since the first of the year, have come under fire from critics because their news-like production style allows them to be run as legitimate news stories. While, the responsibility to identify the items as government produced is that of the station, many, especially smaller stations who may lack the budget to produce original material, run them as official news reports.
