April 5, 2004,
just-food.com, by Philip Fine: The Food and
Drug Administration will recognize the health benefits
of walnuts with a label that will read "Supportive
but not conclusive research shows that eating 1.5 oz
of walnuts per day, as part of a low saturated fat and
low cholesterol diet, and not resulting in increased
caloric intake may reduce the risk of coronary heart
disease. See nutrition information for fat [and calorie]
content."
Walnut producers applaud what amounts to a ‘qualified
health claim’ from the FDA despite the rather
cautious nature of the claim.
The FDA is trying to use current science-based nutritional
information to help Americans make choices to improve
their dietary health.
