Russia mandates all GM products be labelled

October 23, 2003, The Russian government announced that it is modifying a federal consumer rights law to include a clause that will now require all genetically modified food to carry labels identifying them as such.

Tass reported that sources at the Anti-Monopoly Policies Ministry had confirmed that the draft amendments would be considered at today’s [Thursday] cabinet meeting.

"The manufacturers of products containing genetically modified components will be obliged to state not only the expiry date, but also information about the composition, additives used and applicable restrictions, such as counter indications.

"The special requirements for the information about products and forms of its presentation will agree with the European standards," the source said.
