2003, just-food.com: The European Union has instated
a ban on imports of northern Argentine beef after several
cases of foot-and-mouth disease were discovered there
The European Commission said EU veterinary experts
had made the decision after pigs in the northern province
of Salta were found to have the disease. Neighboring
Paraguay has also been experiencing problems with the
Fresh beef exports from Salta and neighbouring Formosa
have been banned.
Argentine authorities are carrying out an animal vaccination
program and have halted the transport of animals in
an attempt to stop the spread of the highly contagious
disease, reported Reuters.
"Meat from other regions of Argentina which are
free of FMD can continue to be imported into the EU,"
the European Commission said
