Campaign to stop the advancing deserts gets a sponsor
Poor nations choose a group to fund the effort to curb desertification

HAVANA, Cuba, September 3, 2003, Reuters: Heads of governments from 10 nations attending a meeting of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) agreed to use $500 million in grants available through the Global Environment Facility to begin curtail the tide of a growing sea of sand. Desertification, the transformation of non-desert land into desert usually due to improper land use, was just 10 years ago an overlooked issue but with an extra 2 billion people to feed over the next quarter century, desertification has caught the world’s attention.
