New plastic disolves in compost—just add water

August 12, 2004, as reported by just-food.com: A biodegradable plastic that will decompose in your compost heap within a month has won a top Australian science prize. Plantic Technologies plastic bag will dissolve in water or breakdown in compost and can be molded like common petrochemical plastics.

Plantic plastic is already used by UK confectioner Cadbury Schweppes for its packaging trays, and other European confectioners are testing the product. The cornstarch-derived ‘plastic’ bag was awarded the Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Industry.
