Critical deadline looms in WTO talks

July 21, 2004, as reported by The World Trade Organization (WTO) is urging member countries to meet the July 30 deadline for establishing a ‘framework’ for the Doha Development Round.

The framework should address: eliminating of all forms of export subsidies by a certain date, and establish a clear timetable for scrapping the various forms of export subsidization; both major points outlined in The Doha Development Round.

“This is a truly defining moment in the history of trade policy. We cannot miss this opportunity”, said Shotaro Oshima, chairman of the WTO general council, which will be asked to accept the framework this month.
