Sri Lankan produce growers eye European market

July 19, 2004, as reported by just-food.com: Sri Lankan fruit and vegetable producers see a market for their products outside the countries borders and they are hoping the government will help them secure it. The Sri Lanka Fruits and Vegetable Producers, Processors and Exporters Association believes it can double exports to more than LKR6bn (US$58.4m) in the coming year with government assistance.

The association has highlighted a strong demand for its products in Europe and the Maldives. However, Sri Lankan exporters are struggling to compete with subsidized exports from other countries. The Association believes that the new government’s decision to give high priority to agriculture may help to develop the sector.
