European Commission OK’s two new products for food use

Brussels, BELGIUM, June 13, 2003 - Two new products, Noni juice and DHA rich oil have been approved by the European Commission for use as food ingredients in the European Union. Neither food contains involves genetic modification.

Noni juice used in pasteurized fruit drinks is made from the Indian mulberry, found in Polynesia and other parts of south-east Asia. Approval for Noni juice was sought by US juice manufacturer Morinda.

DHA rich oil, used as an ingredient in dairy products, breakfast cereals and special foods for energy restricted diets, among other things, is in the approved form derived from the micro-algae Schizochytrium. Approval was granted to the US Martek Biosciences Cooperation.
