|NICOSIA, Cyprus, June 13,
2003 - just-food.com: The rift over genetically modified
food continues to grow, as another country chooses a side. This time
it is tiny Cyprus. The Cypriot government recently announced plans
to launch a week of organic farming as a way of showing its support
for developing organic farming in its country.
In 2001, Cyprus introduced a certification system defining acceptable
organic growing practices and now looks to expand the number of
farmers running government-approved organic operations. It hopes
the week of programs, presentations, and information on running
and launching an organic farm will help inspire its countrymen to
transition from conventional methods.
Cypriot organic regulations are in line with EU legislation, reported
the Cypriot News Digest.
