as reported by just-food.com: The New Zealand
unit of McDonald’s informed its chicken suppliers
it will no longer purchase chickens that have been raised
on genetically modified feed. The decision came in response
to a campaign by environmental advocate group Greenpeace
that has criticized the fast-food company and its purchasing
“McDonald's has given us a position statement
consistent with the stance the company has taken in
Europe which urges its chicken suppliers to source non-GE
[genetically engineered] soy feed,” Greenpeace
GM campaigner Steve Abel was quoted by the New Zealand
Herald as saying.
Greenpeace, who has maintained their campaign against
the chain for the last few weeks, has announced it will
abandon its efforts as long as McDonalds makes good
on its promise.
“We will be keeping a close eye on these shipments
and seeking independent testing of the soy to demonstrate
its non-GE purity,” Abel added.
Inghams, McDonald’s main chicken supplier in
New Zealand, has told the fast-food company its next
two shipments of soy meal into the country would come
from a non-GM area of Brazil.
