Japanese farmer arrested over bird flu

TOKYO, Japan, April 1, 2004, xcerpted from Rueters: A Japanese poultry farmer was arrested after he failed to report large-scale deaths of chickens on his farm, reported Rueters.

Hideaki Asada, 41, president of Asada Nosan Co, was one of three people arrested in connection with the bird flu scandal. The arrest comes just weeks after Asada’s father and wife hanged themselves in connection with the bird flu scandal.

Asada Nosan had come under scrutiny earlier for not reporting chicken deaths on a farm in Kyoto and for continuing to ship live birds and eggs after the chickens had started dieing, the story reports.

Both farms were found to be infected with the bird flu virus. All birds have since been culled.
