The Story of Costa Rican Organic

In San Jose

The vast bulk of organically grown products in Costa Rica—bananas, cocoa, coffee, blackberries and vanilla--are sold for export, but a growing number of organic farmers are selling to local markets.

The Turrialba farmers’ associate represents 180 farmers, 40 of whom have been certified as a group using a process known as “internal control” protocols, which dramatically reduces the cost of certification. One of the farmers in the group is elected and trained as an internal control inspector and contact person with the certification agency.
