FARM UPDATE:
Contaminated hay mulch knocks out crops at
Waterpenny Farm
Posted July 13, 2007:
We covered the success of Rachel Bynum and Eric Plaksin in negotiating
land access in a January story Young
farmer couple and established landowner explore innovative land access
with trust, hard work and patience in Old Virginia. They learned
last month that herbicide residue on hay mulch damaged many of their
vegetable plots. They’ve cancelled two months of CSA deliveries
and cut back on their farmers’ market selling, but will continue
marketing produce from unmulched fields. Some 60 people, including
several of their CSA members, helped to remove 25 tons of wet hay
from 3.5 acres of their farm.
Upshot: Know all
there is to know about hay, manure or compost you import onto your
farm. And help your neighbors when things go wrong.
