Q&A

DEAR NEW FARM:

Regarding your recent story New to Livestock, former tobacco farmers ponder omnivorous option. I just want to say that most small farmers in east Tennessee need more alternatives to transition from tobacco to something we can make a living on, due to our limited acreage.

DEAR MARVIN:

Thank you for your comments. Both Tennessee State University and Kentucky State University host free monthly training programs that help small farmers come up with a range of viable alternatives to tobacco. KSU’s program is called “That Thursday Thing.” Tennessee State’s program, modeled after Kentucky’s is called “Third Tuesdays.” Both are made possible through SARE grant.
