DEAR NEW FARM:
My brother and I just purchased an old tobacco farm in Maryland.
We'd like to build an organic farm on the property but have
to understand if it can be profitable. Any ideas on where
to start?

DEAR SHEILA:
Your best resource is other organic farmers, and our website
is full of their success stories. Jump onto our New Farm forums
www.newfarm.org/forums
and into conversations with other folks who are making it
happen. Talk to your neighbors; find out where the farmers’
markets are in your area and introduce yourself to other organic
farmers in your area (they are notoriously helpful and cooperative).
And go to a meeting: You will not want to miss the Virginia
Association for Biological Farming www.vabf.org
conference February 17 and 18.
Now you are on your way! Good luck on your journey.
